Four Ways to Stay Active This Winter

January marks the start of a new year, which means that many of you will be contemplating a gym membership. However, you don’t need a gym to try some of these non-traditional winter activities that will keep you active throughout the winter months!

Walk

You can do this anywhere and it doesn’t require any equipment. Bundle up if you are heading outdoors or take your walk inside. Try doing laps around your local mall. To keep it interesting, play with your pace and try some interval walking (walk at a faster pace for 30 seconds, then slow it down for 1 minute and continue to alternate). This will challenge your body in a different way, get your heart pumping and be sure to burn some calories.

Play

Yep, you read that right! Let your kids (or kids in general) inspire you to be active and step out of your comfort zone. If you are near snow, go out and build a snowman, go sledding, snowshoeing, or have a friendly snowball fight with your family. “Playing” outside can be fun at any age.

Start Your Spring Cleaning Early

If you are stuck at home, step away from the TV or the computer. Pick a room in your house and start collecting items to recycle or donate. You will feel accomplished and challenge your muscles with all of the lifting and sorting. Also, keep in mind proper body mechanics. Squat down using your legs, hold an object close to your body, and avoid twisting at your waist are just a few tips to keep in mind.

Dance

Many people are too embarrassed to do this in a live gym class or around other people, but you can do it at home! Check on-demand or YouTube dance cardio workouts and go for it. You will challenge your body, sweat, and have fun! We promise.
