Whiplash is an injury to the soft tissues of the neck from a traumatic jerking or whipping of the head. This can be experienced when a person is rear ended or broad sided in a car accident, sports injury or something as easy as hitting your head against a wall. A whiplash can strain the muscles and ligaments in the neck by whipping them beyond their normal range of motion.
