A herniated disc, sometimes referred to as a slipped disc or a ruptured disk, is when one of the cushions (discs) between the vertebra tears and some of the softer “jelly” pushes out through the tougher exterior of the disc. When the disc bulges it can press on the nerve roots causing a variety of symptoms.
- Muscle spasms
- Weakness and numbness down into your buttocks and legs (also known as Sciatica)
Physical therapy can help reduce your symptoms and even help you avoid unnecessary surgeries. Our physical therapists may use therapeutic modalities, manual therapy techniques, massage, lumbar traction, strengthening and stretching exercises. Your therapist will also teach you proper sleeping and ergonomic mechanics to help your recovery.
