Barbara Curtis, PT Physical Therapist
Barbara received her physical therapy degree from the University of Puget Sound in 1989. A former track athlete at the University of Washington prior to PT school, Barb became interested in PT as she was surrounded by collegiate athletes from many different sports recovering from injury.
Barb specializes in the evaluation and treatment of orthopedic conditions and injuries, and enjoys working with a diverse population of patients of all ages and activity levels.
She is fascinated by the process of evaluating a patient and developing and implementing a comprehensive plan of care geared toward each individual’s functional goals.
Utilizing manual therapy, education, and exercise with a special emphasis on core stabilization and restoring muscle balance and optimal movement patterns, Barb strives to help each patient reach their highest level of function. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Physical Therapy Association of Washington. She is also ASTYM certified.
A Seattle area native and mother of two, Barb enjoys spending time with her family, as well as photography, music, theater, and going for walks and hikes. She loves to spend time outdoors, enjoying the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Melissa Becker, PTA Physical Therapist Assistant
Melissa earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from Western Washington University in 2013, and finished the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Whatcom Community College in 2016.
Melissa has previously worked as an aide at our Lakeland clinic and is happy to be continuing as a PTA with Renton Sports and Spine.
Melissa was a collegiate softball player at WWU, and continues to find a passion for athletics.
During her time at Western she worked in the athletic training room, where she found her love for rehab and return to sport for a wide variety of athletes. She is excited to work alongside our highly trained physical therapists at Renton Sports and Spine and Auburn Sports Physical Therapy in order to achieve your personal goals for rehab and getting you back to your active lifestyle. Melissa is also ASTYM certified.
In her free time Melissa continues to stay active with running, hiking, soccer and softball as well as spending time with her family and 2 dogs, Dash and Rori. Melissa is also a huge fan of the Seattle Mariners.
Denise Hayes PT, DPT, OCS Physical Therapist, Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Orthopedic Physical Therapist
Denise is a Washington native who has been a licensed Physical Therapist since 2002 when she graduated from the University of Washington. She also has received her transitional Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2011 from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. She specializes in treating orthopedic conditions as well as dizziness, vertigo, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and other problems of the vestibular system.
Denise became a Board Certified Orthopedic Physical Therapist (OCS) in 2013. This additional certification has allowed her to become more efficient in treating her patients and getting the desired results quickly for both her orthopedic and vestibular patients. She enjoys teaching her patients about their conditions and works to make her explanations of their conditions easy to understand. Denise is also ASTYM certified.
At home, she and her husband are working hard at raising two boys into gentlemen. She enjoys having time with her family, teaching in the community, cooking in her kitchen, playing guitar, sea kayaking, and volunteering with several local groups.
Joanna Swain, RDN, CD Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Dietitian Joanna graduated from Bastyr University with her baccalaureate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Her studies also included a 5th year internship at Bastyr University in a variety of clinical settings. Joanna’s most recent career experience includes over three years at a major medical center where she worked with those facing intensive hospital recovery as well as counseling patients in the hospital’s outpatient clinic serving those with diabetes, heart disease, GI disorders, weight management issues, and general health improvement needs. Joanna is passionate about integrating her clinical expertise with her ability to educate, inspire, and motivate those she is working with to achieve their individual nutrition goals. Joanna enjoys continuing to expand her knowledge of the dynamic area of nutrition, and recently completed the Certificate of Training in Obesity Interventions for Adults. In her spare time, Joanna enjoys cooking, spending time with family and long walks around her home town of West Seattle.
