Summer travel is always something to look forward to. We want you to feel good when you get to your destination. Hours of little to no movement in a confined space can leave your blood flow stagnant, reducing oxygen levels in your blood, and can also lead to swelling around the feet and ankles.
Whether you are flying or driving you should aim to get up every hour to walk or use the restroom. This will help increase circulation and decrease any aches and pains. Avoiding slouching, and adding a small pillow to support your back will help combat low back pain. Read below for 3 simple exercises you can do to stay comfortable while seated. Perform each exercise for 20 repetitions 2-3 times throughout your flight or car ride.
In the seated position, sit up with proper posture; no slouching forward! Rotate your head to the right, pause, return to center and repeat rotating to the left. Make sure to move your head at the same speed as your eyes and stop if you start feeling dizzy. You should not feel any strain or pain.
Perform in a seated position with your hands resting in your lap. Move your shoulders forward, then upward, backward, and down. Repeat, continuing to move your shoulders in a circular motion.
With your feet hip-width apart, press onto your toes raising your heels up off the ground. Make sure to keep the balls of your feet in contact with the floor.
The best thing to do right after a flight or long car ride is to walk as much as possible until you get to your destination. This is an effective way to gently warm up your muscles and keep your circulation flowing!
